The Jermy Family of Norfolk and Suffolk

Jermy Arms

The Jermy family can be traced from Sir William Jermy, who was living in 1221, through to the last of the old family, William Jermy, who died in 1752. It was the wrangles over his poorly-worded will which eventually led to the double murders of Isaac Preston-Jermy and his son Isaac Jermy Jermy at Stanfield Hall, Wymondham, Norfolk on 28 November 1848. James Blomfield Rush was hung for these murders at Norwich Castle on 21 April 1849, after a prolonged and sensational trial.

This web site contains details and photographs of all the known monument inscriptions of the old family, as well as information about the manors they owned. An extensive family tree of this Jermy family and all the related Jermy branches is included, plus information about some Norfolk branches of the Preston, Beevor and Gwyn families.

A comprehensive collection of information about the Stanfield Hall murders has been collected together.

The Jermy and Germany (plus variants) entries of the GRO civil registration of births, marriages and deaths have been extracted for the period September 1837 to December 2005. A set of maps showing their distribution in Britain over time, as well as a statistical analysis is presented.

Transcripts of entries for the Jermy and Germany names (plus variants) have been taken from the 1841 to 1901 census. The 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 transcripts include all known references in England and Wales. References to Jermy probate records from a variety of courts from 1443 to 1858 are included, as well as the probate record index for 1858 to 1998 from the Principal Probate Registry. Relevant extracts from the registers of over 300 Norfolk and Suffolk parishes spanning five centuries are also included, together with some from Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Lincolnshire & Oxfordshire.

Pedigrees of a number of Jermy and Germany families from Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Kent and Essex have also been included.

An extensive bibliography of books, journal and newspaper articles relating to the Jermy family is also provided.
